Death Toll Rises as Search and Rescue Efforts Intensify
Noto Peninsula Region Devastated
TOKYO, Japan - A 7.5-magnitude earthquake has struck Japan's west coast, causing widespread damage and a rising death toll. The earthquake struck off the Noto Peninsula at 07:10:09 UTC (03:10:09 local time) on January 1, 2024. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the epicenter was located at 37.487N, 137.271E.
The earthquake was followed by a series of strong aftershocks, including one of magnitude 6.5. The tremors have caused significant damage to buildings and infrastructure in the Noto Peninsula region. Local authorities have reported that multiple buildings have collapsed, including a hospital and a school.
Search and rescue teams are currently working to locate and evacuate victims from the affected areas. As of Tuesday, January 2, the death toll has risen to over 100, with hundreds more injured. The Japanese government has deployed the Self-Defense Forces to assist in the rescue operations.
The earthquake has also triggered a tsunami warning for the coastal areas of Japan, but the warning has since been lifted. However, local authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and follow instructions from emergency officials.
The earthquake is the strongest to hit Japan since the 9.0-magnitude Tohoku earthquake in 2011. That earthquake and the subsequent tsunami caused widespread devastation and loss of life.
